Mary Williams Burke was born in 1782, in Warren County, N.C., to Mary Freeman and Thomas Burke. She taught school in Hillsborough, N.C,, starting in 1810. In 1834, she moved with her niece, Eliza Mary Bond Johnston, to Greensboro, Ala. Burke and her niece later moved to Marion, Ala., where she continued teaching and tutoring until her death in 1869.
